The skin condition changes as we grow older. The horny, dead surface of the skin renews every three or four weeks till the twenties. In the mid-thirties and forties, the renewal process takes twice the time. Changes occur in the complexion and the tone of the skin. The complexion looks dull and the skin’s tone (vitality) diminishes.
Here are some important facts on the aging of the skin.
- With age, the sweat and the oil glands decrease in number and size and become sluggish.
- While the entire mass of the body shrinks with age, the overlying skin remains the same in extent. The excessskin sags and creases in the form of wrinkles.
- As we grow old there is a breakdown of collagen which gives the skin its elasticity. The body fluids dry out and the bones and muscles lose tissue.
- Lastly, there is substantial decline in the number of blood vessels in the skin resulting in the slowing down of circulation. The skin becomes increasingly sensitive to the heat and cold.

Though these changes are not obvious to us from day to day, they occur everyday as we age. However, a study of the skin condition of women belonging to four different age groups-adolescence, 20 to 35 years, 35 to 50 years and 50 years old can reveal significant and the obvious differences-the tell-tale story of age.
Adolescence - The skin is affected by the hormonal changes which lead to oiliness and an outburst of acne. The skin is otherwise supple and firm.
20 to 35 Years - During this age, women peak endocrinologically. This results in the over-activity of the sweat and the oil glands causing excessive perspiration and oiliness. Large pores accompany the acne and the oily skin condition. In several cases, the first wrinkles appear in this age.
35 to 50 Years - The skin glands become sluggish. The skin becomes thinner, loses its suppleness and dries out. The skin colour begins to change and no longer remains uniform. Pigmented spots appear on the skin. Broken capillaries and veins become noticeable.
50 Years - The skin looks mottled and gains about three different shades of colour. Wrinkles and creases show prominently. The skin becomes extremely dry. Dark brown spots appear at several places on the skin.
Age One to Twelve - If you have normal skin and it has no dry spots or blackheads, there is no special problem. But you would be wrong to think that you can neglect your skin or have no need to take care of it. Always use a good soap and preferably soft water, morning and evening. Rinse several times to remove every last trace of soap and splash with cold water. Apply light moisturising baby lotion to protect the skin and keep it soft.
For Soft Water - Boil some water, let it stand (cool). Add a little boric acid and a little friar’s balsam (tincture of benzoin)
Ultra-Violet Radiation - We have known for quite a while that all ultra-violet radiation is cumulative and that every hour of sunlight a person gets whether at age one, or fifty adds up. But we did not realise until fairly recently that an hour of radiation is far more damaging to a child than to an adult. Of course if you can stay out of the the sun for several years, your skin will recuperate to some extent. But the harm caused by any period of exposure can never be completely reversed. So children should be taught to use sunscreens.
Home-Made Sunscreens : Use calamine lotion and baby lotion (equal quantity) to which is added a pinch of zinc oxide, before your child goes into the sun.
An hour before your child goes into the sun-mix vinegar with olive oil in equal quantities and apply to the areas exposed, leave for an hour and then wash off with mild soap. This prevents sunburn.
